Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) is enhancing healthcare delivery to better meet the needs of the Border community through the statewide rollout of the Timely Emergency Care 2 (TEC-2) Optimising Flow Pathway. Working alongside 14 health services, the Victorian Department of Health, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, this program focuses on streamlining processes to improve hospital efficiency and patient experiences.

The TEC-2 rollout is backed by evidence-based strategies, including seven key care principles designed to streamline patient flow:

  • Discharge planning from day one

  • Ensuring early and safe return home

  • Minimising time spent in emergency

  • Providing safe accommodation for new patients

  • Prioritising early referrals and assessments

  • Adopting transit lounges for inpatients

  • And focusing on daily care progression.

Director of Access and Flow, Felicity Hoodless, emphasised the program's ability to deliver practical outcomes. "TEC-2 is helping us predict, plan, and manage patient flow more effectively, ensuring that patients receive care when they need it, closer to home."

Ms Hoodless added, "The focus on streamlining transitions—from emergency care to inpatient care and home—is transforming how we manage patient flow across our hospital campuses. "

Chief Operating Officer (Acute Hospital Services), Linda Hudec said, “The TEC-2 pathway is about more than improving daily hospital operations—it’s about enhancing the overall healthcare experience for patients and families.”

“Our participation in the TEC-2 pathway signifies a continuation of our commitment to continuously improving the quality of care by reducing delays, coordinating care more effectively, and ensuring patients are supported every step of the way”.

“The new Standards for Safe & Timely Access to Ambulance and Emergency Care released by the Victorian Department of Health last month, seek to improve whole of hospital flow so that patients arriving by ambulance can be consistently transferred to the most appropriate care,” Ms Hudec added.

“TEC 2 is a key component and will serve as an enabler to achieve some of these important standards. We welcome the partnership with the Victorian Department of Health, Ambulance Victoria and Safer Care Victoria to deliver these programs in support of creating system wide improvements.”

Albury Wodonga Health will continue to enhance access to timely emergency and inpatient care across our health service, ensuring high-quality, safe, and connected care for the Border community.
